Who's got the expertise in deep cycle batteries?

Unrelated very beautiful picture of beer, which I do not drink.

I have a 80 AH deep cycle battery that I take camping with me to power my CPAP machine at night. I recharge the battery the next day by various means. This week, I’ve lent the battery to a friend who also sleeps with a CPAP. I’d like to pick up another deep cycle battery with greater capacity and keep both of them around for provident purposes.

Two questions: If you ganged the reds and the blacks together — parallel, right? — could you charge them at the same time?

Also: given your expertise, what do you think of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! on Craigslist? Guy says the batteries are five years old.

Thanks!

Just make sure you wire them in parallel, and not series .

I am not a professional or an ee, but afaik, though you can charge them at the same time it is not necessarily advisable as they may be in different states of charge. It is conceivable that one cell could end up o verc harged before the second cell reaches it’s desired voltage. It’ll work, and if you’re trickling it shouldn’t be too difficult to periodically monitor their individual voltages, but probably best to do them separately if possible.

Take it with a grain until someone with a degree in electricity answers though, lol.

What you’ve said is exactly what I was thinking. I’d think the batteries would even themselves out.

I ran into a guy two weeks ago who’d wired two six-volt batteries in series in his RV, a common practice, but he claimed it doubled the ampere-hour capacity as well as the voltage. I did not know it to be a fact that he was incorrect, but I made a case for it. He couldn’t get there and I did not push it. But your illustration confirms what I thought.

Thanks for the reply.

In theory, yes you should be able to charge them both simultaneously in parallel. Unless maybe you’re using some kind of “smart” charger? Those things really throw me for a loop sometimes. I don’t know if it might shut off automatically once it senses that it’s charged one battery’s worth of amp hours or something like that.

I was more interested in the concept of how the batteries might behave, or if there was some counterintuitive aspect that would cause them to explode or other undesirable outcome. In reality, I’d likely charge them separately. I have a 35-amp (fairly) smart charger that I can plug into my little Honda generator and it works beautifully. I’m also dabbling with a solar panel, but camping, the sites are usually shady, and the panel is big and only produces about 5 amps DC...

My expertise in camping is that you only need need batteries to sit in flashlights, which are rarely used. As far as crap goes, that’s what TP and a shovel are for.

Yes, they’ll even out given the chance when wired in parallel, so assuming you are charging at a reasonably low rate it shouldn’t be a huge concern I don’t think. However, if they were way out of balance with one at say 10% and the other at 80% and you were to try to quick charge them at high amperage, it’s conceivable you might boil the one with the higher starting voltage before the other guy caught up.

A far as exploding, highly unlikely I’d think, unless you were to dead short one or otherwise put an unacceptable load on it... Which chances are you’ll be careful enough to avoid.

Two monster 6v is what we have in our rv. They are brutal to lift in and out-   way heavier than one 12v auto batt.

W ired in series they are 12v and have lasted us longer than 10 days boondocking.

I’ve got a 100w panel to play with this year but we won’t really need it for much.

I charge them at home with a 12v trickle hooked up to the pair on series again. It works fine.

Just for conversations sake, regarding exploding batteries and such, when using batteries in series it is very important they’re kept together at equal charge rates (like you’re doing). Depending on the application, if one battery is at a significantly different charge rate when they’re wired together, and a large enough load is applied, afiak bad things can happen. Equally as important when charging, if charging while they're in series.. . Or at least that’s the way of the lion/imr/inr/icr/lipo world anyway, as I understand it.

Taking your cpap camping? I'll use any excuse to have a night off from that wretched thing.

I don’t think there’s anything that would cause them to explode or become useless. They will just take longer to charge, at least that’s from my limited understanding of batteries
